First-Aid/Injury Preparedness

First-Aid/Injury Preparedness

A key principal of being prepared is to expect the unexpected. No one ever plans on needing to take a medication or needing a bandage, but unfortunately, there are risks in every aspect of life. Whether you are actually performing a dangerous task, or just going through your daily routine, injuries happen to all of us. A key component of being prepared when injury does strike, no matter how major/minor, is to have the proper supplies. We have compiled a common list of supplies/medications that should be kept on hand at all times. This list is not all-inclusive, but should be able to help with a wide variety of injuries/sickness.

Bandaging:

  • Band-aids in a variety of sizes
  • Gauze wraps and pads
  • Adhesive tape
  • Non-stick sterile bandages and a roll of gauze
  • Alcohol pads
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Tourniquet
  • Elastic bandage (such as Ace Wrap)

Medications/Usage:

  • Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) - anti-inflammatory and pain relief
  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol) - anti-inflammatory and pain relief
  • Antibiotic ointment (Neosporin, Polysporin) - topical to prevent infection
  • Calamine lotion - reduces itching, and irritation
  • Burn cream/gel (Alocane, Dermoplast) - treat burns and reduces pain and inflammation

Other Helpful Supplies:

  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Emergency Blanket
  • Flashlight (Batteries)
  • Non-latex Gloves

Injuries do happen, and most often at the most unexpected of times. It is critical to have a well-supplied first-aid kit and proper supplies stored away in your home, your car, and anytime you perform any task where injury may occur. You never know when the injury may happen to you, or you may come across a situation where first aid may be critical.

Prepare today, before it is too late.

--This article is not medical advice, nor is it all-inclusive. Use this a guide to help prepare for unexpected situations. Having these supplies may just assist as a temporary measure until medical attention can be sought after. In the event of serious injury, sickness, or at the judgement of the person treating or being treated seek medical help immidiently by dialing 911 or going to your local medical facility. Do not use this article as a substitute for medical attention.
